In the most recent mock draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers find an exciting new quarterback.

In 2023, the Pittsburgh Steelers experienced one of the oddest seasons. They had a mediocre offense for the majority of the season, but they were still winning games. However, their good fortune appears to be running out. The last several weeks have been dreadful, thanks in part to Kenny Pickett’s injuries. The offense has been lethargic even with Pickett in the lineup. Analyst Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports’ latest mock draft has the team trading up to grab Michael Penix Jr. to improve their offense.

In 2019, the Steelers moved up to No. 10 for LB Devin Bush. In April, they should seriously explore trading up at least that high for a quarterback. They must stop leaning into their faults and instead admit them and move forward. Then acquire a legitimate OC (this turns out to be important as well!). pic.twitter.com/e3V7ncRf35

According to the most recent mock draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers will select Michael Penix Jr.
The Steelers have made a trade-up, and Wilson believes Penix Jr. is a good fit for the offense.

“The Steelers’ offense feels like it belongs in the 1850s, not the 1950s.” And what you get from Michael Penix Jr. is a deep ball thrower. Guess what Diontae Johnson and George Pickens enjoy doing? Deep breaths. With so much going on in the locker room, who knows what this will look like a year from now? Michael Penix Jr. is exceptional. He’s one of the top deep ball throwers in college football, if not the best.”

The deep ball is a big element of the attack, and another quarterback might provide this offense a much-needed boost.

Will the Steelers let Pickett go?
Even if it isn’t Penix Jr., one of the greatest offseason doubts is whether the organization will let Kenny Pickett go. They used a first-round pick on him, and when a team uses a first-round pick at any position, it is often difficult to get rid of them. However, a club must cut its losses and move on at some point. This quarterback class is so deep that now is the ideal moment to locate a replacement.

If the Steelers fail, there will most likely be significant changes in Pittsburgh. If they elect to change coaches, the chances of a new quarterback in Pittsburgh grow.
