QPR Transfer Update: Marti Cifuentes discusses the January approach, potential reunion with Tim Iroegbunam, and updates on new contracts.
Queens Park Rangers, led by Marti Cifuentes, are facing a tough battle to secure their Championship status. Despite an initial surge in performance following the arrival of the Spanish manager, a recent string of four defeats in their last five league matches has raised concerns about the team’s potential relegation to League One next season. Currently positioned at 23rd in the Championship table, QPR’s summer recruitment, predominantly of free agents, has not yielded the anticipated impact.
The club’s 2023/24 signings include Asmir Begovic from Everton, Morgan Fox from Stoke City, Jack Colback from Nottingham Forest, Paul Smyth from Leyton Orient, Ziyad Larkeche from Fulham, Steve Cook from Nottingham Forest, and Taylor Richards from Brighton, all on permanent deals.
To enhance their chances of survival, the upcoming January transfer window becomes crucial for Cifuentes to strengthen the squad, with significant additions required in various positions to maintain competitiveness this season. This marks Cifuentes’s inaugural transfer window as the QPR manager, providing him an opportunity to imprint his influence on the playing squad since his appointment in October the previous year.
Despite financial constraints, Cifuentes hasn’t ruled out an active January transfer window, acknowledging the team’s need for reinforcements due to several key players facing injury issues. Cifuentes emphasized the importance of being creative in the transfer market while understanding the financial limitations imposed on the club.
In a statement to London News Online, Cifuentes said, “It definitely will be busy in the sense that we will try our best to be creative, [while] understanding the situation where we are that makes us very limited in the options we can afford.”
QPR’s struggles continued with a 2-1 home defeat against Cardiff City on New Year’s Day, further highlighting their challenges in front of goal. The absence of key creative players like Ilias Chair and Chris Willock, coupled with experienced players Jack Colback and Steve Cook, has posed a significant challenge for Cifuentes’s side. Despite recognizing the difficulties, Cifuentes stressed the need for the team to perform well collectively and seize opportunities, especially when key players are unavailable.
Amidst their struggles, QPR has reportedly shown interest in reuniting with midfielder Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa, with the possibility of the player being sold during the upcoming January transfer window.
