Travaris Robinson staying at UGA despite Bama interview.
Travaris Robinson has decided to remain at Georgia, despite having an interview on Sunday with Alabama’s new coach Kalen DeBoer for the position of Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator, according to sources informed ESPN.
Having served as Alabama’s cornerbacks coach under Nick Saban for the past two seasons, Robinson assumed an expanded role in the defense this season. Following Saban’s retirement announcement last Wednesday, Robinson was appointed as Georgia’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach just three days later, stepping into the role previously held by Will Muschamp, who transitioned to an off-field analyst position. Glenn Schumann is the primary playcaller for Georgia’s defense.
DeBoer, named Alabama’s coach last Friday night, sought to retain Robinson as part of his coaching staff, recognizing Robinson’s significant contributions to Alabama’s defensive team and his effectiveness as a top recruiter for the Tide. However, Robinson ultimately decided to stick with his initial choice and stay at Georgia.
Robinson brings extensive SEC experience, having played at Auburn and served as South Carolina’s defensive coordinator under Muschamp from 2016 to 2020. He was not retained by Shane Beamer when Muschamp was dismissed. Robinson also coached defensive backs at Florida from 2011 to 2014 and at Auburn in 2015 before joining Muschamp at South Carolina.
Alabama’s running backs coach Robert Gillespie and defensive line coach Freddie Roach are expected to remain on the staff under DeBoer. DeBoer also plans to bring in several staff members from Washington, including offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, whom Saban had interviewed for Alabama’s offensive coordinator position last year.
