The captain of the Steelers shares his top picks for the next offensive coordinator.

After swiftly resolving speculation surrounding their head coach, the Pittsburgh Steelers now face a significant decision regarding their coaching staff, specifically the need for a new offensive coordinator. Team captain Cameron Heyward shared his preferences for potential candidates on his “Not Just Football” podcast episode on January 19.

Pittsburgh Steelers DL Cameron Heyward Names OC Picks

Heyward mentioned three names—Eric Bieniemy, Shane Waldron, and Bobby Slowik—as individuals he would like to see take on the role. He emphasized the importance of selecting someone capable of engaging multiple players and leading the group effectively.

However, landing candidates from Heyward’s list might prove challenging. Waldron has been hired by the Bears since the podcast episode aired, Slowik is actively interviewing for head coaching positions and is a favorite for the Titans job, and Bieniemy, though unlikely, is in an intriguing position with the Commanders undergoing changes in ownership, general management, and head coaching.

Despite these challenges, the Steelers face a critical decision in choosing their next offensive coordinator. While much attention is focused on the team’s quarterback choice for the upcoming season, the OC selection is equally vital for addressing the team’s offensive struggles in 2023, where only four NFL teams scored fewer points. The team’s success relies on the development of quarterback Kenny Pickett, and the OC hire will play a crucial role in this process.

The article emphasizes that the Steelers have various options to explore for the offensive coordinator position. Although the previously mentioned candidates may not be available, alternatives like Alex Van Pelt, Pep Hamilton, Darrell Bevell, Chip Kelly, and Kliff Kingsbury have been suggested. The team must make a strategic decision to ensure offensive improvement in the 2024 season and capitalize on the talents of key players before their window to contend narrows.
