After paying respect to the late assistant coach Dejan Milojević, the Warriors resume their work.
SAN FRANCISCO — Following an extended break for mourning, the Golden State Warriors returned to practice on Monday, where they collectively watched a tribute in Serbia for the revered former coach and player, Dejan Milojevic. Milojevic, who served as an assistant coach for the Warriors, tragically passed away at the age of 46 last Wednesday after suffering a heart attack during a team dinner.
The emotional impact of the loss was evident as coach Steve Kerr expressed his sentiments at Chase Center, describing the traumatic experience of witnessing the incident. Kerr praised Rick Celebrini, the vice president of player health and performance, for his composure and professionalism throughout the ordeal. The entire organization, including players and staff, is grappling with the trauma of the sudden loss.
Counseling services have been made available to support the Warriors during this challenging time. Kevon Looney, who had a close relationship with Milojevic, shared his struggle and emphasized the importance of remembering and sharing stories about the beloved coach.
The Warriors, as a team, are mourning alongside Milojevic’s family. Kerr acknowledged the profound impact on Milojevic’s family and highlighted the ongoing support provided by player Dario Saric.
In a moving tribute in Serbia, Milojevic’s former team Partizan hosted Mega, the club he coached and helped produce numerous NBA draft picks. The ceremony included video highlights of Milojevic’s career as a player and coach, his jersey on the bench, and a heartfelt standing ovation from both teams and the crowd. Kerr, wearing a black “BRATE” T-shirt with Milojevic’s initials, expressed the team’s emotional response to the tribute.
Despite the shock and grief, Kerr acknowledged the need to focus on leading the team in upcoming games. The NBA and other teams have shown understanding by postponing Warriors’ games to allow them time to mourn and recover.
As the Warriors plan to honor Milojevic in their upcoming game against Atlanta, Kerr emphasized the challenge of navigating the emotional turmoil while playing a basketball game. There is a collective effort within the organization to find a meaningful way to pay tribute to their late coach on Wednesday night.
