Philadelphia Eagles are interviewing a terrible candidate to fill the position of offensive coordinator.

The Philadelphia Eagles are undergoing changes not only at the coordinator level but also among their position coaches. One notable development is the consideration of former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry for the linebackers coach position.

Last year, the Eagles lost their original linebackers coach, Nick Rallis, when he followed Jonathan Gannon to the Arizona Cardinals. To fill the void, the Eagles brought in D.J. Eliot, the former defensive coordinator at Temple. However, the struggles of the Eagles’ linebackers seemed more related to talent deficiencies rather than coaching issues, given the limited resources allocated to the position.

Unfortunately for Eliot, coaching changes are a common occurrence in the industry. New Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has his own preferences for his coaching staff, and Barry appears to be one of his choices.

Barry, 53, boasts extensive experience in coaching:

– 1995: USC graduate assistant and defensive line coach
– 1996-1998: Northern Arizona linebackers coach and defensive ends coach
– 1999: UNLV linebackers coach
– 2000: San Francisco 49ers defensive quality control coach
– 2001-2006: Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach
– 2007-2008: Detroit Lions defensive coordinator
– 2009: Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach
– 2010-2011: USC linebackers coach
– 2012-2014: San Diego Chargers linebackers coach (overlapping with Nick Sirianni in San Diego from 2013-2014)
– 2015-2016: Washington [Commanders] defensive coordinator
– 2017-2020: Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach and linebackers coach
– 2021-2023: Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator

Report: 'Heat is on' Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry to finish 2023

Throughout his coaching career, Barry has worked with notable linebackers, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks, first-team All-Pro De’Vondre Campbell, two-time Pro Bowler Takeo Spikes, and one-time Pro Bowler Cory Littleton.

Despite Barry’s recent dismissal by the Packers, he showcased his coaching acumen with commendable game plans during the playoffs. The Packers’ defense limited the Dallas Cowboys to 10 points before garbage time in their Wild Card loss, and they held the San Francisco 49ers to one of their lowest scoring outputs of the season. Notably, the Eagles’ defense struggled against both teams in 2023. Barry’s insights and strategies could prove valuable to Fangio in addressing such challenges.

Overall, Barry emerges as a strong candidate for the Eagles’ linebackers coach position. However, it’s imperative for Howie Roseman, the Eagles’ general manager, to provide Barry with better talent to maximize his coaching capabilities.
