Jesse Minter departing from Michigan to become a new Los Angeles Chargers DC under Jim Harbaugh

Michigan is set to bid farewell to another key member of its coaching staff as defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is set to join Jim Harbaugh on the staff of the Los Angeles Chargers, according to reports from The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb. Minter, who previously served as a defensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL, will return to the professional league in the same role with the Chargers.

During his two-year tenure at Michigan, Minter played a pivotal role in shaping a formidable defense, consistently ranking among the top 10 nationally in various defensive categories including points allowed, total defense, and run defense. Notably, under Minter’s guidance, the Wolverines secured a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2023, boasting the top scoring and total defense in the FBS. His exceptional coaching prowess was recognized with a nomination for the prestigious Broyles Award, celebrating the top assistant coach in college football.

Minter’s departure comes after speculation surrounding his potential candidacy for NFL coaching vacancies and even as a potential replacement for head coach at Michigan. However, he has opted to follow Harbaugh to the West Coast.

Before his stint at Michigan, Minter showcased his coaching acumen at Vanderbilt as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach, and earlier with the Baltimore Ravens under coach John Harbaugh. He also served in various coaching capacities at Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Indiana State, and Georgia State, building a diverse coaching background.

With Minter’s exit, newly appointed head coach Sherrone Moore will be tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the defensive coordinator position ahead of the 2024 season, as the Wolverines prepare to defend their national championship title against Fresno State in August.
