Reports suggest that the Giants aim to announce their new defensive coordinator by the week’s end.

The New York Giants find themselves in the midst of a search for their next defensive coordinator after Wink Martindale’s departure earlier this offseason. The process of filling this crucial position appears to be nearing its conclusion, with general manager Joe Schoen shedding some light on the timeline during the Senior Bowl on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters in Mobile, Alabama, Schoen indicated that they are aiming to finalize the hiring of their next defensive coordinator by the end of the current week. This announcement comes as a reassurance amid the anticipation surrounding the Giants’ defensive coaching staff.

Over the past month, the Giants have been actively interviewing numerous candidates for the coordinator role. Among these contenders, Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson appears to be a frontrunner, although there is considerable competition for his expertise.

This decision holds significant weight for the Giants, as they are under the leadership of head coach Brian Daboll, who is in his third season with the team and is in the process of appointing his second defensive coordinator. Securing the right fit for this role is paramount, especially considering Martindale’s departure and his valued contribution to the coaching staff. By the week’s end, the Giants expect to have a clear picture of who will be spearheading their defensive unit in the upcoming 2024 season.

In addition to the defensive coordinator search, Schoen is also navigating other crucial decisions within the organization. The future of star running back Saquon Barkley is among the topics under consideration, with Schoen preparing to make a definitive decision in this regard.

Furthermore, the Giants’ front office is keeping a close eye on the upcoming NFL Draft, with Schoen emphasizing their comprehensive approach to evaluating talent across all positions, including the possibility of selecting a quarterback.

As the Giants continue to address key personnel matters, including coaching appointments and roster evaluations, they remain focused on making strategic decisions to position the team for success in the upcoming season.
