The Red Sox have taken action on their 40-man roster in preparation for the upcoming spring training, with a notable addition made on Wednesday.

In a move disclosed through a press release, Boston secured utility player Romy González from the Chicago White Sox while also designating Zack Weiss for assignment to accommodate the roster adjustment.

González’s baseball journey traces back to his selection by the White Sox in the 18th round of the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft. Over the span of three seasons with Chicago, he has displayed his versatility by contributing five home runs and 27 RBIs, maintaining a .600 OPS. His defensive flexibility has seen him occupy positions in the middle infield as well as the outfield. However, González faced a setback in August when he underwent surgery to address a labrum tear in his shoulder, causing him to sit out the remainder of the 2023 season. Notably, the 27-year-old has local connections, having showcased his talents for the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2017, where he earned recognition as an all-star.

On the other hand, Weiss joined the Red Sox from the Los Angeles Angels back in August. During his tenure with Boston, he demonstrated his pitching prowess by tallying a 3.21 ERA across 12 appearances, accompanied by 15 strikeouts.

With González’s inclusion, the Red Sox’s 40-man roster now boasts a trio of utility players, with Ceddanne Rafaela and Pablo Reyes already in the mix.
