A familiar presence has returned to Jacksonville as Riley Patterson rejoins the team.
Following a trade last May that saw Patterson leave Jacksonville and subsequent stints with the Lions and the Cleveland Browns, he has now signed a futures contract to return to the Jaguars.
Patterson’s previous tenure with the Jaguars saw him participate in all 19 games of the 2022 season, including the playoffs, where he demonstrated his reliability by converting 33 of 38 field goal attempts. Notably, he achieved a perfect record of 2 out of 3 field goals from distances of 50 yards or more and successfully made 36 of 37 extra-point attempts.
While Patterson had a somewhat rocky start to the season, missing four field goals in the first 10 games, he significantly improved, going 19 of 20 for the remainder of the season. His overall performance in 2022 included converting 30 of 35 field goals (85.7%) and 36 of 37 extra points (97.3%), accumulating a total of 126 points scored. His standout performance in Week 16 against the New York Jets earned him the title of AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, with four field goals and an extra point contributing to 13 points scored.
The Jaguars had traded Patterson to the Detroit Lions in exchange for a conditional seventh-round selection in the 2026 draft after acquiring former Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus. However, McManus’s performance in the 2023 season was marked by inconsistency, with a 30-of-37 field goal success rate (81.1%), including 5-of-10 from 50 yards or beyond. Notably, McManus struggled particularly in the final seven games of the season, including crucial misses in games against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens.
As Riley Patterson returns to Jacksonville, the team aims to benefit from his proven track record of reliability and consistency in the kicking game.
