The Cleveland Browns are reportedly exploring options to replace Joe Flacco as Deshaun Watson’s backup for the upcoming season, and one potential candidate is a former division rival quarterback.
Toni Grossi, speaking on “The Really Big Show” on ESPN Radio, suggested Mitch Trubisky as a possible backup option for the Browns. Trubisky, recently released by the Pittsburgh Steelers, is viewed favorably due to his previous connections with the Browns’ front office and coaching staff, particularly with quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey.
Trubisky, who was selected by the Chicago Bears as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, has started 50 games across four seasons with the Bears, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2018. After a year as the backup in Buffalo under Dorsey’s guidance, he joined the Steelers in 2022, where he appeared in 12 games, starting seven, and achieving a record of 2-5.
While Flacco had a positive impact during his time with the Browns, recording a 4-1 regular-season record and demonstrating strong passing performances, turnovers, particularly interceptions, were a concern. Flacco has expressed interest in returning to Cleveland for the 2024 season, but his desire for a chance to compete for a starting role might conflict with the Browns’ commitment to Watson as the starting quarterback.
Furthermore, Flacco’s late-season success may have increased his market value, potentially making him more expensive to retain compared to Trubisky, who signed a more affordable two-year extension with the Steelers in May 2023.
Overall, the Browns are considering their options for Flacco’s backup, with Trubisky emerging as a leading candidate due to his experience, previous connections, and potentially lower cost compared to Flacco.
