The University of Tennessee has filled its linebackers coach position with William Inge, a former co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Washington, succeeding Brian Jean-Mary. This appointment, alongside the hiring of RB coach De’Rail Sims, marks the completion of both staff vacancies in a single day.

William Inge was reportedly set to join the University of Alabama with new head coach Kalen DeBoer to coach outside linebackers. However, this arrangement fell through, making him the second coach in a week to change plans about coaching under DeBoer. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb also opted to take a position with the Seattle Seahawks, along with Scott Huff, the former offensive line coach at Washington and Alabama. This turnover within DeBoer’s staff since his hiring on January 12th reflects significant changes in personnel.

Inge, aged 50 and hailing from Missouri, boasts an extensive coaching background with various stints throughout his career. He began as a graduate assistant and recruiting coordinator at Iowa in 1998 before moving on to Northern Iowa and eventually coaching at five different locations between 2006 and 2015. Notably, he spent the longest duration of his coaching career at Indiana from 2013 to 2019, where he held various coaching positions, including co-defensive coordinator, linebacker coach, special teams coach, and associate head coach.

Inge’s coaching journey intersected with Kalen DeBoer during his tenure at Indiana, continuing through stints at Fresno State and Washington. At Washington, Inge was promoted to associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach.

Analyzing Inge’s coaching performance, his defensive units have achieved varying levels of success in terms of points allowed per game (PPG) over the years. While the statistics provide some insight, it’s essential to acknowledge that evaluating defenses solely based on opponents’ PPG isn’t comprehensive. Additionally, Inge’s role as a linebackers coach means that other metrics, such as tackles for loss, may offer a more accurate assessment of his coaching effectiveness.

In terms of recruiting, Inge has played a significant role as the primary or secondary recruiter for numerous recruits rated as 3-stars or higher by 247Sports. His recruitment efforts have extended beyond the Midwest, encompassing states like Florida, Georgia, and California, where he secured commitments from some of the top-rated players.

As William Inge transitions to his role at the University of Tennessee, there are expectations regarding his coaching performance and recruiting abilities. Head coach Josh Heupel and defensive coordinator Tim Banks have shown a willingness to explore unconventional hires, reflecting a focus on enhancing the team’s competitiveness in the SEC. Ultimately, the success of Inge and De’Rail Sims, along with their impact on recruiting, will be closely monitored as they join the Tennessee Volunteers coaching staff.
