Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that the Red Sox are currently assessing their options in the market to bolster their depth in the infield. They are particularly interested in acquiring a versatile infielder who could potentially compete with several players like Pablo Reyes, Bobby Dalbec, Enmanuel Valdez, and Romy González for a backup role.
In recent weeks, Boston had been linked to various infielders who have since signed with other teams. Amed Rosario, Gio Urshela, and Garrett Cooper were among those players, all of whom signed relatively inexpensive contracts elsewhere. Despite their availability, the Red Sox decided not to aggressively pursue them, suggesting that they didn’t perceive an urgent need for infield reinforcements. Nonetheless, they remain open to signing other players to minor league or short-term MLB deals.
Several free agents, such as Donovan Solano, Elvis Andrus, Evan Longoria, C.J. Cron, Joey Votto, and Adam Duvall, could provide additional depth at various infield positions. However, the Red Sox are content with their current infield options for everyday play, including Triston Casas, Vaughn Grissom, Trevor Story, and Rafael Devers, despite potential defensive shortcomings, especially on the left side.
Pablo Reyes, who demonstrated solid contact skills and defensive versatility last season, seems likely to secure a roster spot due to his lack of minor league options. However, the Red Sox are still open to adding another infielder with a more potent offensive profile to complement their existing roster. Bobby Dalbec, in particular, could face increased competition for a roster spot if the team opts to sign a player to a major league contract, as he is entering his final option season at 28 years old.
