The latest addition to the coaching staff of the Panthers includes both offensive and defensive coordinators, solidifying the leadership under the newly appointed head coach.

Dell McGee was officially introduced as the head coach of Georgia State football by the University on Monday, swiftly moving to complete the team’s staff. McGee’s selections for the key roles of offensive and defensive coordinators are Jim Chaney and Kevin Sherrer respectively, as reported by Matt Zentiz of 24/7 Sports.

Chaney, known for his previous roles as an offensive coordinator at prominent institutions like Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Meanwhile, Sherrer’s background includes coaching stints at powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, as well as professional experience with the New York Giants and Georgia Tech.

The need for a new head coach arose when Shawn Elliott departed to join the South Carolina Gamecocks as an assistant. McGee’s appointment holds significance due to his local connections, having grown up in Georgia and attended high school in the state.

McGee’s coaching journey includes time spent in the NFL and the Arena Football League before transitioning to coaching at the high school level in Georgia. He later served at Auburn for a season, followed by a tenure at Georgia Southern where he even served as the interim head coach in 2015. His association with the Georgia Bulldogs as an assistant head coach and running backs coach since 2016 has further solidified his standing within the state’s football community, particularly with his experience working alongside Kirby Smart.

Following Elliott’s departure, Georgia State football initially named strength coach Mike Sirignano as the interim head coach, leading to the cancellation of spring practice as the search for a permanent head coach commenced.

In summary, Dell McGee’s appointment as head coach of Georgia State football brings with it the swift recruitment of experienced coordinators in Jim Chaney and Kevin Sherrer. McGee’s local ties and extensive coaching background make him a fitting choice for the position, and his additions to the coaching staff signal a new era for the Panthers as they prepare for the upcoming season.
