The New York Jets made a significant move in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by trading up to select Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis with the 171st overall pick. To acquire Travis, the Jets exchanged their 185th and 190th picks with the Philadelphia Eagles. This move comes as the Jets aim to develop a backup quarterback behind veteran Aaron Rodgers, who suffered an Achilles injury earlier in the season.

Jordan Travis had a stellar college career at Florida State, where he demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities and solid performance as a signal-caller. Despite a significant leg injury that ended his senior season early, he amassed impressive statistics during his tenure, setting a school record with 10,554 total yards of offense. His ability to make off-platform throws and his mobility make him a promising developmental prospect.

Before his injury, Travis led the Seminoles to an 11-0 start in the 2023 season and was named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 2,756 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only two interceptions in his senior year. His junior year was equally remarkable, with 3,214 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. He also added seven rushing touchdowns for four consecutive seasons, showcasing his versatility and athleticism.

The Jets’ decision to draft Travis reflects their need for depth at the quarterback position following Rodgers’ injury and the trade of Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos. With Rodgers recovering and veteran Tyrod Taylor providing experienced backup, Travis has the opportunity to develop and potentially become a key contributor in the future.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas made a calculated move by selecting Travis, considering the team’s quarterback struggles last season. If Travis can recover from his injury and fulfill his potential, he could play a more significant role as Rodgers’ career winds down. Travis brings a level of excitement and underdog determination to the Jets’ quarterback room, with the chance to learn from one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks while carving out his own NFL journey.
