Missouri College Student Riley Strain’s Death Deemed ‘Accidental’

By Sheri Walsh

In a tragic update, the death of Riley Strain, a Missouri college student whose body was discovered in Nashville’s Cumberland River after being missing for two weeks, has been officially ruled as an accidental drowning combined with alcohol poisoning. This announcement came from the medical examiner’s office on Tuesday.

Riley Strain’s body was recovered from the Cumberland River on March 22, two weeks after he had gone missing. Strain had been last seen at Luke Bryan’s 32 Bridge bar in Nashville, where he was reportedly drinking with his Delta Chi fraternity brothers. According to the bar, Strain was served one alcoholic beverage and two waters before being escorted out.

The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is currently investigating whether Strain was overserved alcohol at the bar before being ejected. Surveillance footage from the night shows Strain stumbling outside, wandering the streets of Nashville.

Autopsy and Investigation Findings

The autopsy report confirmed that there was no foul play involved. Strain’s blood alcohol content was .228, almost three times the legal limit for driving. Additionally, the cannabis compound Delta-9 THC was detected in his system.

The toxicology report found no traces of Rohypnol or other central nervous system depressants commonly associated with intentional foul play, leading investigators at the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conclude that Strain’s death was accidental.

“The MNPD’s investigation revealed that Riley Strain consumed several alcoholic drinks at different venues after arriving in Nashville with friends on March 8. The investigation also noted that he became separated from his friends and was visibly impaired as he walked onto Gay Street, adjacent to the Cumberland River,” the police department stated in a release.

Detectives believe that Strain did not notice the terrain conditions in the darkness and accidentally fell down a steep embankment into the river. Heavy rain had caused the river to rise significantly that night, creating a swift current.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department extended their condolences to Strain’s family and friends, acknowledging the heartbreaking nature of the incident.
