Monroe Mustangs Men’s Track and Field Has Successful Season Opener at Stockton Invite

POMONA, N.J., April 3, 2021 – A pair of first-place finishes and a broke record highlighted opening day for the Monroe College Mustangs men’s track and field team on Friday at the Stockton Invite #2, hosted by Stockton University.

Enock Kimutai made a stellar debut for the Mustangs, breaking the school’s outdoor record in the 5,000-meter run with a first-place time of 14:58.64. His time also qualifies him for the NJCAA Outdoor Championships. Mohlouwa Koos Molutsi took second overall in the race with a time of 15:50.52.

Edward Williams Jr. picked up Monroe’s second first-place finish of the day, winning the 110-meter hurdles after clocking in at 15.57 seconds.

Elvis Chebogel’s first collegiate race saw him finish the 1,500-meter run in 4:11.98. DeShawn Williams debuted in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.17.

Derriko Lewis competed in his first outdoor race for the Mustangs in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.82 seconds for a second-place finish.

Tyhir Jones ran his first collegiate race in the 400-meter dash and clocked in at 53.33 seconds to take fifth.

Jones and Edward Williams Jr. both ran the 200-meter dash on Friday. Jones took sixth overall at 24.02, narrowly edging out Williams, who clocked in at 24.05 to take seventh.

The Mustangs are back at it again on Saturday, April 3, at the Wilton Wright Invite at Southern Connecticut State University.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men’s and women’s rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 17 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
