Is it time for the New York Giants to shake things up under the leadership of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll?
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report seems to believe so, as he recently proposed a blockbuster trade involving Buffalo Bills star wide receiver Stefon Diggs on February 5. According to Moton’s suggestion, the Giants would send Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the AFC East contender in exchange for Diggs and a 2024 sixth-round pick. Additionally, the Giants would offer a 2024 second-round pick (No. 39) and a 2024 fifth-round pick to sweeten the deal for the Bills.
This trade speculation stems from comments made by Diggs during the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, where the high-profile receiver expressed uncertainty about his future in Buffalo.
While Moton’s proposal may seem bold, he provides compelling reasoning to support the potential move. Moton argues that the Giants are in desperate need of help in the passing game, as none of their pass-catchers surpassed 60 receptions or four receiving touchdowns during the 2023 season. Additionally, Moton highlights the Giants’ failed attempt to acquire tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders, further emphasizing the need for a high-level pass-catcher. Moton points out Daboll’s familiarity with Diggs from their time together with the Bills, where Diggs earned his first All-Pro nod in 2020.
Moreover, including Lawrence in the trade allows the Giants to retain their No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 draft, as well as one of their two second-round picks. Moton acknowledges that Diggs’ age of 30 may impact his trade value compared to other wideouts involved in recent blockbuster transactions.
However, parting ways with Dexter Lawrence would be a challenging decision for the Giants. Despite his contributions not always reflecting on the stat sheet, Lawrence has been a game-changing presence on the Giants’ defense. He has consistently received Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors over the past two seasons and has impressive statistics in terms of quarterback pressures and defensive stops, making him a vital asset to the team.
In summary, while Moton’s proposed trade presents an intriguing possibility for the Giants to bolster their passing game, the decision to trade away a key defensive player like Dexter Lawrence would undoubtedly be a tough sell for the team.
