Former Detroit Lions quarterback David Blough has transitioned into a coaching role with the Washington Commanders, as announced by the team on Thursday morning. Blough, who concluded the 2023 season on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad without signing a futures contract, has officially retired from playing at the age of 28 to embark on this new chapter in his career.
Throughout his playing career, Blough amassed seven career starts, completing 138-of-242 passes for 1,435 yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His last on-field appearance dates back to 2022 when he filled in as the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals during a two-game stretch.
Recognized for his football acumen and strategic insights, Blough returned to the Lions as the team’s third-string quarterback for the 2023 season after brief stints with the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings.
“Lions coach Dan Campbell praised Blough’s intelligence on the football field, highlighting his invaluable experience,” during the 2023 season.
Although it remains uncertain if the Lions extended a coaching position to Blough, the team currently employs Mark Brunell as the quarterbacks coach and J.T. Barrett as an assistant coach. Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the Lions may seek additional support for their quarterback roster. Jared Goff is slated to return as the starting quarterback, with 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker potentially stepping into the backup role. However, with Blough and Teddy Bridgewater retiring to pursue coaching opportunities, Detroit may explore acquiring a veteran quarterback to provide leadership in team meetings and serve as a reliable backup option if needed.
