In the early stages of the 2024 NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing certain defensive challenges that require attention.

They lacked depth in the linebacker position during the 2023 season, and similar concerns arose regarding safety depth. Additionally, there’s a need for a cornerback (CB2) and potential reinforcements on the defensive line.

Although the team boasts a formidable front seven featuring players like T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Elandon Roberts, and Cameron Heyward, alongside promising rookie Keeanu Benton, they may part ways with Larry Ogunjobi to alleviate salary cap pressure following a disappointing 2023 performance. Consequently, they might seek a veteran replacement, preferably an accomplished defensive lineman.

Brad Spielberger of PFF identified the Steelers as a potential destination for Philadelphia Eagles lineman Fletcher Cox in his analysis of free agent interior linemen. Despite being past his prime, Cox showcased his enduring capabilities in 2023 by maintaining a significant role in the Eagles’ defense, contributing to sacks, pressures, tackles for loss, and run defense.

Cox, a former standout with numerous accolades, including All-Pro selections and Pro Bowl appearances, has attracted interest from the Steelers in the past. While the team attempted to acquire him via trade before the 2021 deadline, negotiations faltered due to the Eagles’ high demands.

Mutual interest between Cox and the Steelers has resurfaced, as evidenced by Cox expressing admiration for Steelers player Cameron Heyward during a podcast appearance. Cox’s remarks hint at a potential desire to join forces with Heyward on the field, suggesting a positive dynamic between the two players and potential synergy within the Steelers’ defensive lineup.
