Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Andy Russell, a two-time Super Bowl champion, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 82, according to a report by Action News 4 in Pittsburgh.

Russell’s football journey began when he was drafted by the Steelers in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL draft from the University of Missouri. Despite a promising start to his career, he was absent from the Steelers’ lineup for the 1964 and 1965 seasons due to military obligations. However, he returned to the team in 1966 and quickly reestablished himself as a linchpin of the Steelers’ defense.

During his illustrious 11-year career with the Steelers, Russell earned seven Pro Bowl selections and played in every game of each season, showcasing his durability and skill as a linebacker. He played a pivotal role in the Steelers’ triumphs in Super Bowls IX and X in 1975 and 1976 respectively, capping off his NFL tenure on a high note with two championship victories.
