Less than two weeks away from the official start of NFL free agency, the New England Patriots have taken their first step by re-signing their first player. The latest reports from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero indicate that quarterback Nathan Rourke has put pen to paper on his one-year exclusive rights free agency tender.
Rourke’s journey to this point has been one of perseverance and determination. Originally an undrafted free agent from Ohio University, Rourke found his way to New England in the middle of December. Joining a quarterback room already occupied by Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, Rourke initially assumed the role of the team’s third-string quarterback. However, his dedication and work ethic paid off as he was promoted to the backup position over Jones for the season finale against the New York Jets.
Despite his promotion, Rourke did not see any action on the field for the Patriots during the 2023 season. Nevertheless, his re-signing marks the first move by the team’s new leadership under head coach Jerod Mayo and director of scouting Eliot Wolf.
Prior to his stint with the Patriots, Rourke had brief stints with the CFL’s B.C. Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although he saw limited action, featuring in three preseason games for the Jaguars without attempting a pass, Rourke has yet to make his mark in regular-season NFL games.
With Rourke now locked in for the 2024 season, the Patriots still have 21 free agents whose statuses remain uncertain. Five of these players, including Rourke, are categorized under the exclusive rights label.
The impending start of free agency on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET marks the beginning of a crucial period for NFL teams, including the Patriots. The legal tampering window, which opens two days earlier, allows teams to negotiate with impending free agents before the official start of free agency.
As the Patriots gear up for the offseason, securing Rourke’s services represents a strategic move in bolstering their quarterback depth.
