According to a report by Ian Rapoport from NFL Network on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers have secured the services of former Green Bay Packers tackle Yosh Nijman through free agency. Nijman, initially signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2019, has amassed a considerable amount of experience during his tenure with the team, participating in 67 games, with 22 starts, particularly notable during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
With uncertainties surrounding the left tackle position due to David Bakhtiari’s injury concerns heading into the previous offseason, many speculated that Nijman would assume the role of the Packers’ left tackle if Bakhtiari was unavailable. However, Rasheed Walker, a second-year seventh-round pick at the time, ultimately secured the position. Nonetheless, Nijman remained an active contributor, often rotating with Walker on the field during the 2023 season.
Throughout his time with the Packers, Nijman demonstrated versatility, participating in a total of 1,591 offensive snaps and 341 special teams reps. Notably, his imposing stature at 6’7″ contributed to his effectiveness in blocking field goals, showcasing his value beyond traditional offensive line duties.
Reportedly, Nijman has inked a two-year contract with the Panthers, valued at a base amount of $8 million, which could potentially escalate to $15 million with performance-based incentives. A significant portion of the base value, $5 million, is guaranteed. This deal represents a calculated move by the Panthers, securing a top-tier swing tackle at a contract value that remains favorable, particularly if Nijman ascends to a starting role.
The Panthers have been proactive in addressing their offensive line concerns during the free agency period, notably acquiring guards Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt. Additionally, they retain key talents such as Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton at tackle positions. While Nijman may face challenges in securing playing time within the Panthers’ stacked lineup, his compensation reflects his status as one of the premier backup options in the league.
Conversely, for the Packers, Nijman’s departure adds to a string of losses among their offensive line personnel in free agency. Earlier in the offseason, guard Jon Runyan Jr. departed for the New York Giants. Both Nijman and Runyan contributed significantly as rotational players in 2023. With only guard Royce Newman boasting notable playing time among backup offensive linemen on the Packers’ roster, it is likely that the team will prioritize replenishing their offensive line depth in the upcoming draft.
As the offseason progresses, the Packers will face the challenge of ensuring stability within their offensive line amid ongoing roster changes. The departure of Nijman underscores the importance of strategic planning and roster management as they aim to maintain competitiveness in the upcoming season.
