Elite Legacy Wide Receiver’s Commitment to FSU Football Is Lost
A top-50 prospect with a pledge has left the Seminoles.
Hiring is dynamic and constantly evolving. Prospects who were once thought to be a lock occasionally turn out to be unexpected.
That’s what transpired on Monday night when Florida State lost the commitment of rising junior and four-star wide receiver Devin Carter. The 2026 blue-chip prospect is resuming his recruitment after a season in which he proved to be among the best players in his class.
Carter helped Cedar Grove High School win the state championship by catching 51 passes for 923 yards and 13 touchdowns. That came after a rookie season in which he played in the FBU Freshman All-American Bowl and totaled 30 receptions for 417 yards and six touchdowns.
Seemingly wanting to emulate his father, the native of Georgia committed to Florida State back in April. Carter is the son of Devin Carter, a former Seminole running back who was a Tallahassee star from 1986 to 1989. Before making his seven-year professional debut and winning a Super Bowl, Carter was a two-sport athlete in college.
Carter chose to renounce his commitment to FSU on the same day that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart paid a visit to his university. In March 2023, the Bulldogs extended a scholarship offer to him.
Due to his withdrawal, Florida State is down to two pledges in #Tribe26: defensive back Darryl Bell III and four-star wide receiver Efrem White. The Seminoles fell from first place in the country to sixth place.
In the 2026 class, 247Sports ranks the 6-foot, 165-pound wide receiver as the No. 35 overall prospect, the No. 3 WR, and the No. 5 recruit in the state of Georgia.
