Updates on WR Deebo Samuel’s shoulder injury are available in the 49ers injury report.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during the Divisional Round win, didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice but is reportedly “feeling better,” according to coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan expressed cautious optimism about Samuel’s status for the upcoming NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, stating that the receiver’s current condition is a positive sign. However, Shanahan didn’t provide further updates aside from acknowledging Samuel’s ongoing discomfort.

During practice, Samuel was seen on the sidelines wearing a jersey, engaging in sprints while holding a football under his arm.

Samuel’s injury occurred early in the game against the Green Bay Packers, limiting his playing time to just nine snaps before he exited permanently. This incident marked his second shoulder injury this season, following a previous hairline fracture in Week 6.

Fortunately, X-rays earlier in the week revealed no fractures, alleviating concerns for the 49ers. Samuel’s absence would be keenly felt in the offense, given his versatility and impact demonstrated throughout the regular season, where he amassed over 1,100 yards and scored 12 touchdowns despite missing some games. The team’s performance significantly fluctuated based on Samuel’s presence on the field, highlighting his importance to their offensive strategy.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Samuel’s availability, his teammates, including quarterback Brock Purdy and fellow receiver Brandon Aiyuk, expressed optimism about his potential return for the championship game. Aiyuk, in particular, voiced hope that Samuel would recover in time to contribute to the team’s effort in securing a victory against the Lions.

Report: 49ers, Deebo Samuel agree to three-year, $71.55M contract extension

The 49ers are set to face the Lions in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, aiming to clinch a Super Bowl berth. Samuel’s participation would undoubtedly bolster their chances, as they seek redemption after falling short in the last two conference title games.
