Dan Campbell Discusses the Possibility of Ben Johnson Leaving

The Detroit Lions face the customary challenge of dealing with player departures in the offseason, but their most significant potential loss for the 2023 team could be offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Johnson’s coaching prowess has made him a highly sought-after candidate in the NFL since November. Despite only two head coach positions remaining vacant – with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders – NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on January 29 that Johnson will interview with both teams.

Following the Lions’ NFC championship game loss to the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Dan Campbell addressed the possibility of Johnson’s departure, acknowledging his critical role within the team while expressing confidence in managing the situation.

While Johnson has contributed to the Lions’ offensive success over the past two seasons, with the team ranking in the top 5 for both yards gained and points scored, Campbell indicated that he’s not yet preoccupied with finding a replacement for Johnson, emphasizing the need for rest before addressing staffing concerns.

There were initial speculations that the Lions might lose both Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to head coaching positions. However, recent reports suggest a more optimistic outlook for the Lions, with indications that they might retain at least one coordinator.

Additionally, there’s potential upheaval within Detroit’s coaching staff, with wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El interviewing for the offensive coordinator position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Randle El’s possible departure would compound the challenge of replacing Johnson if he were to leave.

The upcoming week promises to be eventful for the Lions, with the prospect of significant coaching vacancies looming. However, there’s also a chance that none of these departures materialize, leaving the team’s coaching staff intact.
