The Raiders have been advised to absorb a $24 million dead cap hit and release a free agent disappointment.

The Las Vegas Raiders are gearing up for significant changes in their offensive strategy this offseason, as head coach Josh McDaniels and several of his appointed assistants face departures. This likely signals an overhaul in the quarterback department under the guidance of new general manager Tom Telesco.

While rookie contract holder Aidan O’Connell’s position remains secure, the future of Jimmy Garoppolo appears uncertain. Despite the considerable dead money of $23.8 million remaining on Garoppolo’s contract, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report advocates for his release this offseason to free up cap space and align with the team’s evolving quarterback plan.

Releasing Garoppolo with a post-June 1 designation would incur dead-cap hits of $15.5 million and $12.8 million in 2024 and 2025, respectively, but would also yield $12.1 million in cap savings for the 2024 season. Although the financial implications of the dead cap are less than ideal, given the limited contribution Garoppolo has made to the team, his departure seems increasingly likely.

The decision regarding Garoppolo’s future hinges partly on the offensive coordinator appointment, as different coaching philosophies may favor distinct quarterback styles. While some coaches may prioritize mobility, it appears unlikely that Garoppolo fits into the envisioned quarterback blueprint for the Raiders.

Head coach Antonio Pierce’s preference for a youthful quarterback, evident in his reluctance to bench O’Connell during offensive stagnation, suggests a shift towards a younger quarterback roster. This inclination towards youth may influence future coaching staff hires and roster decisions, potentially leading to Garoppolo’s release.

As for Brian Hoyer, all three quarterbacks from the 2023 roster, including Hoyer, are under contract for the upcoming season. While Hoyer is unlikely to contend for a starting position, his role as a backup seems secure, especially considering his $2.6 million cap hit for the next season, which offers no financial savings through his release.

Despite being 38 years old, Hoyer’s guaranteed $2.6 million for 2024 makes retirement seem improbable, especially given his pivotal role as a veteran presence on the team. His extensive NFL experience and mentoring capabilities render him a valuable asset, providing guidance to younger quarterbacks like O’Connell or potential rookies.

In summary, while the Raiders face significant changes in their offensive setup, particularly in the quarterback department, Garoppolo’s departure seems imminent, aligning with the team’s evolving strategy. Meanwhile, Hoyer’s role as a veteran mentor remains crucial, ensuring continuity and support for the team’s quarterback development amidst transitional phases.
