Michigan football coach has decided to accept the three-game sideline ban imposed by the Big Ten in connection with the sign-stealing controversy engulfing the program. In a statement, Michigan confirmed that Harbaugh will comply with the remainder of his suspension, signaling the conclusion of the conference’s investigation into the matter.

The disciplinary action from the Big Ten came ahead of the Wolverines’ 24-15 victory over Penn State. Initially, Michigan sought a temporary restraining order to allow Harbaugh to continue coaching from the sidelines, but this request was denied. However, a subsequent hearing was scheduled for Friday, prompting Harbaugh to express his intention to participate in the proceedings.
“I’m going to talk on Friday,” Harbaugh stated to reporters. “I’m just looking forward to that opportunity—due process. I’m not looking for special treatment, not looking for a popularity contest, just looking for the merit of what the case is.”
The announcement on Thursday came as somewhat unexpected, as it seemed Michigan was prepared to explore all available avenues before Harbaugh would be sidelined for Saturday’s game against Maryland or the regular-season finale against Ohio State on November 25.
Although Harbaugh’s dealings with the Big Ten have concluded, the NCAA is still conducting an investigation into whether Michigan engaged in illicit means to decipher opponents’ sideline signals. Former Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions allegedly purchased tickets to several games involving other Big Ten schools and potential College Football Playoff contenders with the aim of recording their signs. Both Central Michigan and the NCAA are investigating whether Stalions inappropriately obtained sideline access for a game against Michigan State earlier in the season.
Harbaugh has consistently denied any knowledge of a deliberate attempt by Stalions or others to scout games in violation of NCAA regulations for signal decoding purposes.
